SuperValu supermarkets will be the first company in Ireland set to roll out 100 % compostable and reusable shopping bags from next month in its shops in a bid to reduce plastic waste. Compostable bags are made of vegetable matter, such as corn or potato starch. When exposed to enough moisture, the bags will compost. The move will remove 2.5 million plastic bags from circulation over the next year. When the bags have been used as many times as possible and are ready to be thrown out/ disposed of/dumped, they will be taken to an industrial composting site, where they will turn into water and CO2 within 90 days. Last year they introduced fully compostable fruit and vegetable bags, resulting in 2.7 million single-use plastic bags being taken out of circulation. If introduced globally this will be a good start to reducing the need for plastic. Some UK supermarkets offer the same service, but as of yet not 100%. Another step in the right direction for recycling; Sneem, my hometown has installed a bottle filling station in the village. This unit provides free filtered water for all and its aim is to reduce the amount of single-use plastic waste being produced by encouraging people to refill their bottles.

Compostable: Means that a product is capable of disintegrating into natural elements in a compost environment, leaving no toxicity in the soil. Roll out: An informal term for the introduction of a new product or service to the market.
